HASTINGS TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

The Hastings Townswomen’s Guild will celebrate its 21st birthday this week. It was formed on July 3, 1933, with the dual rble of providing women with a common meeting ground and educating them in citizenship. The Townswomen’s Guild came into being in Britain in 1929, a year after women were granted their franchise. The first townswomen’s guild outside Britain was formed in Napier in 1932. Its formation was due to the inspiration of a Hawke’s Bay woman. Miss Jerome Spencer, founder of the women’s institute in New Zealand. Miss Spencer learned from an English friend of the movement in Britain, and she felt that formation of the guild in Napier would bring women together for mutual help and combined effort in the restoration of social and civic services in the town after the 1931 earthquake. i The Hastings guild was formed the next year.
