GOATS AND MILK

Sir, —Rural England grazed goats with cattle to safeguard bovine health in protection from tuberculosis. American investigation seemingly demonstrates that tubercle bacilli will not live or thrive in goats’ blood. Did we not learn in your columns that good goat herds for the production of healthy milk were being built up in Canterbury? After seeing pleasant pictures of handsome specimens, it was disappointing to learn on inquiry that milk was available only to certain infants. Then news stated that lack of demand was causing the scheme to be abandoned. Is that so, or is it still correct that goats’ milk is produced only for those with a medical certificate requiring it—Yours, etc., SOLIDS AND FATS. July 6, 1954.
