DREDGING THE ESTUARY Sir,—Christchurch city is built on what was, originally, a swamp, with many parts lower than the average. Drainage has been a problem, and very costly, owing to the lack of fall. You do not need to xiig very deeply, especially in the lower parts, to find water. Houses situated in these low parts are damp at this time of the year, if not all the year round. This makes them unhealthy and the occupants are exposed to the danger of streptococcal sore throats, tonsillitis diphtheria, bronchial troubles, and tuberculosis. Tonsillitis is very prevalent where people reside alongside rivers that have foul, muddy banks, especially among children. And before the Avon was dredged there was quite a lot of tonsillitis in Avonside. Neglect to dredge the Heathcote, Avon, and the estuary has accentuated this trouble.—Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER. July 6, 1954.
