NOMINATIONS AND WITHDRAWALS
SECRETARIES SUGGEST UNIVERSAL TIME A decision that clubs should have a universal closing time of 4 p.m. for nominations and withdrawals was made at the two-yearly conference of trotting club secretaries in Christchurch last evening. The meeting, which was attended by 34 secretaries, was convened by the secretary of the three Christchurch trotting clubs (Mr D. C. Parker), who was elected chairman.
The subject of a universal closing time had been discussed at the previous conference, said Mr R. S. Green (Gore), who brought the proposal forward last evening. There should be no difficulty in obtaining unanimity, he said. Mr J. E. Cuthill (Invercargill) said the five clubs for which he was secretary had all adopted 4 p.m. closing for nominations and withdrawals, and had found it a great success. Clubs had come to depend to a great extent on the Totalisator Agency Board, and early closing was a great advantage to them. He would have supported a suggestion of 2 p.m. closing. Clubs which had tried 4 p.m. closing had found it successful, said Mr A. E. Forrest (Auckland), and he thought that an ideal time. He would oppose any suggestion of 2 p.m. closing.
When the motion was put to the vote it was carried unanimously. After a long discussion on the subject of trotting club secretaries inspecting horses for registration, it was decided to appoint a committee to discuss this subject with the president and secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. The next meeting of secretaries will be held the day before the annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference in 1956.
