Towed 18 Miles By Whale Shark

(Rec. 11.10 p.m.) ST. PETERSBURG (Florida), July 5. A 50-foot whale shark was reported tonight to have towed a 65ft boat and 50 passengers 18 miles before it escaped. The fishing vessel had to radio for help during the seven-hour struggle with the fish.

Captain J. B. Matthews, master of the fishing vessel, Captain B. A. E. Strickland, said he and his fishing party sighted the whale shark yesterday in the Gulf of Mexico. When the whale shark surfaced to feed, the Captain B. A. E. Strickland, came alongside and a grappling hook, with an inch cable for a leader, was shoved into its mouth. As the line was pulled tight with a power winch, the whale shark took off, turning, and bumping the boat as it did so. When the vessel had been towed a few miles, Captain Matthews sent a radio message to another fishing vessel to come alongside and take off some of the passengers who had become nervous. The others stayed aboard until the line finally snapped.
