TWO PLACES FOR NEW ZEALANDERS
, The Royal College of Art, London, has decided to set aside two places each year for New Zealanders. They will be eligible for the two or threeyear diploma courses or for the year’s certificate course, depending on previous experience and qualifications. The scheme is designed to encourage the practice of industrial (design, so preference will be given to students in this field and in commercial art. The work of candidates between the ages of 20 and 30 years will be examined by the college itself for the final selection, initial inquiries being received by the National Art Gallery, Wellington. The Royal College of Art has about 400 students in 10 schools providing the most advanced and professional Instruction in Britain under leading artists and designers. Besides its main courses, there are specialised departments for industrial design, including product design of all kinds, furniture, woven and printed textiles, ceramics, silversmithing and jewellery, industrial design, fashion and Interior planning, and typography. The college has recently been re-equipped throughout and has special access to the facilities of the neighbouring Victoria and. Albert MUseum and the Science Museum in South Kensington. Professor Basil Ward, a New Zealander, holds the Lethaby chair of architecture. Mr Paul Olds, of Christchurch, is president of the junior common room, and another New Zealander, Miss Agnes More, is a student in the school of fashion design.
