WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
FIRST ASSEMBLY IN AMSTERDAM (Rec. 8 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, Aujl 22. The first assembly of the World Council of Churches was formally opened in Amsterdam’s historic New Church. A total of 145 church bodies in 42 countries were represented by 1200 clerics and laymen. Russia declined an invitation to attend, but Hungarian and Estonian delegates are attending the 14-day assembly, which will begin work to-morrow. The 1200 delegates entered the church in procession. The service was cosmopolitan, with well-known hymns sung simultaneously in a score of languages. The five council presidents attended. They are the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Archbishop of Thyatira (Mississippi), the Archbishop of Uppsala (Sweden); the 83-year-old American evangelist. Mr John R. Mott, and Dr. Marc Boegner (France). The council was founded in 1937 at Utrecht, and has existed provisionally. The first assembly will make the council a permanent organisation.
