U.S. PROPOSAL DEFEATED
DECISION AT MARITIME CONFERENCE
(Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 27. A heated debate in an ail-night session at the World Maritime conference in Seattle between the United States delegate. Mr H. M Jackson, and the United Kingdom delegate. Mr George Strauss, M.P., en . l n a tering defeat for the Ainerican proposal for a flat eight-hour day for seaMr Strauss, vho was supported by Mr Richard Sneddon, the delegate, said that an was not feasible for European countries, and added that, the Labour Organisation s would be destroyed if it adopted conventions which could not be ratified. Mr Jackson heatedly replied that he could riot understand the ~ any Labour Government which opposed an eight-hour dry.
