RICCARTON BUSH
Sir, —Surely there is some sentiment left among us descendants of the pioneers (those people who loved beauty) to help us to preserve our Riccarton bush; or do we all belong to this rushing, racing, drinking, bulldozing age? Lord Bledisloe at Hanmer, looking at the oak avenue, remarked, “One thing you New Zealanders don’t appreciate or love is trees. This avenue in England would be perfectly kept.” Have any of you noticed the desecration of glorious trees in Hanmer going on now? And do our soldiers, nurses and workers of the first world war recall the lovely drives they had through the New Forest (where we had five hospitals)? Could not the spineless descendants of the pioneers spare a few shillings or pounds to save this bush from the jerry-builders?—Yours, etc.. A TRUE LOVER OF TREES. June 27, 1946.
