NIGHT PRINCE

FAVOURITE AT TB RAPA TO-DAY The Riccarton-trained jumper Night Prince did not impress when he was schooled at Te Rapa last Tuesday, but he was possibly not at his best over strange country. Howevei* when sent over the hencoop and the brush double on Thursday he gave a sound display, and attracted the attention of track watchers. He is a favourite for the Waikato Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase to-day, in which most opposition may come from Dumbo, Tideover, and Etaro. Etaro won a double last week, but now has 11-1 to carry. Night Prince will be ridden by his usual rider, A. McKerrow, who was on him when he won a double at Dunedin earlier in the month. A Veteran Passes Muraahi, which dead-heated with Te Kara in the Auckland Cup in 1923, died at Taihape last week at the age of 28. A gelding, Muraahi was by Campfire (one of the last sons of Carbine) from Ineuru, a Maniapoto mare that does not appear in the Stud Book. He raced until he was nine years old, and among his successes were the Wanganui, Waverley, and Egmont Cups and the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. He also finished third to Scion and Foo Chow in the New Zealand Cup. Change of Stables The Raker, which was previously trained by F. J. Boyle at Heddon Bush, is now in E. J. Burns’s stable at Washdyke. He has been nominated for both the steeplechase and the hurdle races at Washdyke. The Raker won against a weak field at " his second start over hurdles, but his subsequent form has not been good. Lapse May be Temporary With 10-1, Shepherd’s Mate is nicely placed in the weights in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles at Hastings to-day. After his good performance in the Waikato Hurdles last month—when he led all the way ana beat Air Port, Blue Title, Hunto, and Bramble Song, all of which have performed well since*—his poor display last Saturday was surprising. Northern reports suggest that his lapse should be disregarded. It was certainly his worst display as a hurdler. Possible Reappearance Prince Shad has been nominated for the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke next Saturday. On his day Prince Shad can show brilliant form; but he is not sound. He made only one appearance last year, and his last win was in the Doncaster Handicap at Washdyke two years ago, when he finished brilliantly and beat Gulf Stream by a head. In the previous season he won the Douro Handicap at Wellington in convincing style. He is trained by F. C. Christie at Orari, and is now seven years old. In Light Exercise „ Red Pickle has been put into light exercise at Wingatui by Dr S. Jamieson, in preparation for spring racing. He is in robust condition, and should aad further to his record in the new season. Several good offers were made for the gelding after he got on the winning list, but his owner declined to put a price on him. Resumed Work M. J. Wadley has Vafort back on the tracks at Riccarton. He is very. big in condition, but may be ready to race in August. Vafort has raced well when on the big side, and should be a good handicap prospect for spring racing. Related to Pink Coat Wayside, which registered an attractive performance when she finished second to Da Vinci in the Heretaunga Handicap at Hastings last week, is a wellbred mare by Kincardine from Either Way, an unraced sister to Pink Coat. Either Way is by Hunting Song from Red Edna by All Red and traces to Sylvia, the ancestress of many good horses in New Zealand. Pink Coat was one of the best two-year-olds of his year, and as a three-yetft-old won the Harcourt Cup at Trentham, beating a high-class field that included Commendation, Concentrate, Seatown. Silver Paper, Hunting Cry, and Admiral Drake, all high-class winners. If Wayside repeats last Saturday’s form she would have a good chance in the Havelock Handicap to-day. HIGH PLAY SOLD AUSTRALIAN TRAINER’S PURCHASE (Rec. 12.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, June 28. High Play, who, along with his New Zealand stablemate, Rahiri, has been on the market for the last fortnight, was sold yesterday to the Werribee trainer, Steve Murphy. The price was not disclosed. High Play was owned by Mr Alan Scott, a radio dealer in New Zealand, and his trainer, N. J. Dwyer. The horse, a five-year-old gelding by Croupier, won only one race in Melbourne.
