Deserter Sentenced.— The findings of the district court-martial which sat at Papakura on Monday to hear a desertion charge have been promulgated. The accused was Gunner Brian Thornton, who was charged with desertion in that he absented himself from Kamo camp from October 5, 1942, until arrested on June 15 this year. He was also charged with losing, by neglect, articles of clothing and equipment worth £9 12s Bd. A plea of not guilty to both charges was entered. The Court has sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour on the desertion charge. On the other charge stoppages of pay amounting to £9 12s 8d have been ordered.—(P.A.?
