WATERFRONT CONTROL

REPEAL SOUGHT OF WARTIME REGULATIONS , (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 27. The Wellington Harbour Board carried the following resolution on Wednesday evening;—“That the board strongly protests against the continuation of the Waterfront Control Commission and is of opinion that the war-time regulations applying to the conduct of port authority should be repealed as soon as possible.” The chairman, Mr W. H. Price, said that from information received former members of the Waterfront Commission were to be retired, and the commission was to be carried on under members yet to be appointed. Mr Price, said the commission had functioned during the war years, but the board had derived no benefit, but the reverse, as the cost of handling cargo was considerably Increased. In addition, the board was restricted as to the mobility of its labour, and had had imposed on it the payment of bonuses to waterside workers. The board had expected to be freed from control with the coming of peace, but it was now proposed that the commission should continue to exercise control. The application of war-time emergency regulations to peace-time working was entirely unwarranted.
