LAWN TENNIS
MR J. MERCER NOMINATED AS N.Z. PRESIDENT
COACHING SCHEME IN OPERATION
It was unanimously approved by the committee that Mr J. Mercer’s name De forwarded to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association as the Canterbury nomination for the New Zealand presidency, at a meeting held last evening of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association.
The extent of the coaching scheme at present in operation was made known to the meeting. Twenty-four pupils were receiving instruction twice a week at the studio of A. D. Brown (official coach to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association). Saturday morning coaching at Wilding Park had not begun. The organisation was at fault and it was up to the pupils to get in touch with the coach and make appointments. If difficulties arose, players wishing to arrange lessons were advised to get into touch with the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, which would make contact with the coach.
A letter from the. .South.: Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association complaining that the dates for the New' Zealand tennis championships clashed with its provincial championships was received. It was decided after some discussion that this matter should be held over tin a later meeting.
Mr Mercer told the committee that an engineer had examined the stands at Wilding Park and had reported adversely on them. A report was expected from the Building Controller shortly. Some discussion took place concerning the “Tennis Review” (official magazine of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association), and one suggestion was that to defray expenses a nominal charge of Id should be made to all clubs. It was agreed to make further inquiries.
