RUGBY FOOTBALL

HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH

TIMARU BEATS CHRISTCHURCH (PA> TIMARU, June 27. Ability to capitalise on their opponents’ errors gave Timaru Boys’ High School victory to-day over Christchurch Boys’ High School in the annual Rugby match by 8 points to 3. Christchurch won the second fifteens’ match by 3 points (a penalty) to 0. Kitchingham, the star Christchurch player, was bustled by the Timaru breakaways, who gave him little peace during the match. The Christchurch forwards, among whom Haywood and Griffiths were prominent, secured the ball for the backs from most of the set scrums; but they were unable to pierce the Timaru defence, and the back movements broke down. Timaru was superior in the loose rucks until the final 10 minutes. Then the Christchurch forwards carried all before them; but their effort was too late. With rapid breaking from the set scrums and controlled dribbling, Timaru carried the play to their opponents’ line in the first five minutes for Morgan to score. Christchurch dominated the remainder of the spell, but lack of finish spoilt promising back movements. Timaru repeated their bustling tactics on the resumption of play, and Blyth scored. From then one Christchurch had the better of the game, and Kitchingham sent the ball to Turner at the half-way mark for the winger to beat five opponents and cross the line at the corner flag. The kick failed. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS’ CLUB Third Grade A team v.
