IMPROVEMENT OF RACING
Sir, —As one who saw New Zealand racing in its heyday, I should like to point out some of the grand old sport’s fallacies at present. There is no doubt that the bookmakers and the doubles totalisator were dispensed with for the financial benefit of the racing clubs. At a course such as Riccarton nowadays we get mediocre service from the club and every inducement to bet to the limit. Put the doubles totalisator and the bookmakers back and we shall have this satisfaction: the bettor will know exactly what dividend to expect and he can pick his double legally. Let the already rich clubs cater a little more for the person who keeps the totalisator returns soaring—the punter.— Yours, etc,, „ S. IL SMITH. Xune 24, 1946.
