MANSION HOUSE PLANTATION
Sir,—The desire of the Cheviot Domains Board to take over control of the Mansion House plantation would be laudable if the aim were to preserve a stand of introduced trees; but one could, argue that there is ample room for 'new plantations on waste land both on Cheviot Hills and Lowry Peaks. As for more recreation grounds, there are at present sufficient facilities for more than five times the population of the whole county. As there is no industry in Cheviot likely to attract more workers, it does not seem reasonable to ask for houses to be built from plantation timber. But there are several married returned servicemen who would be glad to see houses of any sort. The Cheviot Domains Board needs houses for the residents, not plantations for visitors. —Yours, etc,, READY MONEY. Cheviot, June 6, 1946. [The chairman of the Mackenzie Domain Board, Cheviot, says: “The correspondent is ignorant of the fact that the Mackenzie Domain Board is not asking for the plantation, but just the ornamental trees surrounding the site of the old homestead. The board has neither the power nor the money to build houses for tenants.”]
