PRICE OF POTATOES
Sir, —Could you inform me or tell me where I could be informed on the. following matter. Before last potato : planting season, all farmers were circularised to the effect that unless potatoes were grown under contract to merchants, the guaranteed price could not be expected. My husband contracted with a merchant for his Arran Banner seed potatoes, which, when dug, were passed as certified “mother” seed, Group 3. The price on this contract was £lO standard size and £9 for undergrade. Now we have received a notice from Wellington that the basic price for certified mother seed, Arran Banner, potatoes, is £l3 a ton. May a merchant legally re* quire a grower to sign a contract at £3 a ton less than the guaranteed price (which at that time was unknown to the grower) and may the grower demand more?—Yours, etc., J.E.K.
June 24, 1946. [An officer of the Department of Agriculture said that he considered the case would be governed entirely by the contract made with the merchant.]
