BRITISH CONCERN ABOUT POLAND
“Increased Tension In Political Life” ACTIONS AGAINST PEASANT PARTY (N.Z Press Association--Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, June 24. “Recalling the solemn undertakings of the Polish Provisional Government, and regretting the increased tension in Polish political life, the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Bevin) is gravely concerned at the delay in holding elections in Poland ana by signs that this delay is being used to undermine one of the principal parties permitted by Polish law,” said the Minister of State (Mr P. No<?l-Baker) in the House of Commons.
The Minister was replying on behalf of Mr Bevin to a question from Professor D, L. Savory (Conservative, Belfast University) whether the Foreign Secretary was aware that tfie Polish Provisional Government had suspended the Peasant Party in sisf of the most densely populated areas where it had a large following. Professor Savory also asked whether Mr Bevin would point out to the Polish Government that “this attempt to force Mr Mikolajczyk (leader of the Peasant Party) to join a single election bloc” was inconsistent with the Yalta agreement.
“More than 100 commanders of the ‘Free Germany’ underground terrorist organisation have been arrested in Poland,” reports Reuter’s correspondent in Moscow, quoting the Tass News Agency. “Polish security police discovered the organisation in Lower Silesia. Its orders were received from underground centres in Germany. Those arrested will be tried at Breslau.”
