LORD MONTGOMERY IN ATHENS
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ATHENS, June 24.
“We soldiers must be above all political strife,’’ said Field-Marshal Lord Montgomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, addressing 400 Greek officers from all parts of Greece, at the Athens Military College. “It is not open to a soldier to change his allegiance because of his political views. We give allegiance to the Government of the day,” he added. After receiving a medal for gallantry from the Greek Minister of Defence, Lord Montgomery drove through Athens, receiving a tumultuous welcome from enormous crowds. He later visited the Greek Prime Minister (Mr Tsaldaris) and the Regent (Archbishop Damaskinos). A report from Rome says that Lord Montgomery is due there to-morrow.
