NEW HIGHWAYS
RECOMMENDATIONS OF NO. 14 DISTRICT COUNCIL
On advice that the Main Highways Board was prepared to consider a limited declaration of highways in the coming_ year, the No. 14 District Highways Council at its last meeting recommended the applications of five local bodies. First priority was given to 10J miles of Mount Brown and Douglas roads, which the Kowai County Council sought because of its heavy use by lorries carting lime. ‘ In other applications the chairman (Mr E. F. Evans) was given authority to select the order of priority. , . t ~ .. These included a joint application by the Heathcote and Hals well Coun cy Councils concerning three and a-half miles of Cashmere road, because of the proposed erection of the new hospital at Cashmere, the tunnel road, and the use of the road as a southern outlet from the city and as a scenic drive. The Heathcote council, supported by the Christchurch Tramway Board, also sought declaration as a main highway of Dyer’s, Breeze’s, and Palmer’s roads, giving direct access to South Brighton. and opening up a large area suitable for housing. The Waimairi, Paparua, and Halswell Councils applied for a similar declaration concerning Hansen’s and Lincoln main junction rpads, carrying shingle and other heavy goods traffic. A similar request from the Rangiora Borough Council for declaration as a highway of Percival street was recommended; but it was stated that approval was unlikely unless the council would agree to revoke the existing highway running parallel and close to Percival street.
