SURRENDER OF COUPONS
FIGURES FOR WEEK (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 25., The following table gives the total number of meat and u bu^ te t r h^ at on n c hief pons saved m each of the 20 chiei postal districts in the last week, the list being given m order of merit based on a population basis:—
Nelson won the pennant for the week, with the smallest possible margin separating Gisborne, last weeks winner, and Masterton in second and third place. Oamaru and Napier both recorded a great improvement to be next. Whangarei responded excellently, and rose from seventeenth to ninth, while New Plymouth contributed to the week’s decline in figures with a very considerable falling off. These fluctqations, however, the Famine Emergency Relief Committee states, are not unusual, as districts make their effort very intensive in certain weeks. In a statement to-night, the committee pointed out that the winning districts were saving between two and a half and three coupons a week a household. Great concern was felt at the lack of response from the large districts of Wellington and Auckland. Wellington figures for this week were an all time “low,” and represented a saving of one coupon a week for every five households. Auckland figures for the week were one coupon saved in every four households; CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES IN CREASED CONTRIBUTION OF BUTTER An increase in the number of butter coupons surrendered in Christchurch during the last week, and a decrease in, the amount of meat saved have been reported by the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee. Meat coupons surrendered totalled 26,434, a decrease of 3400 when compared with the previous week. The total of 1321 butter coupons handed in was 160 greater than that reported in the previous week. Twenty-eight butter coupons and 2526 meat coupons were handed in to the committee’s depot in Cathedral square during the first three days on which the depot was open. COLLECTION OF FAT The Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee has arranged that all shops in Christchurch owned by the Self Help Co-op., Ltd. will act as reception depots for fat collected lor Great Britain. From Monday next housewives will be able to take their accumulated fat to any store, where a receptacle will be provided for each type of fat ~
