TRAINING OF TEACHERS

DEPUTATION MEETS MINISTER

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 25. Acting on a resolution passed at its annual meeting, the New Zealand Educational Institute has asked the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) to set up a consultative committee to inquire into the selection and training of teachers. The views of the institute were placed before Mr Mason yesterday by the president (Mr W. J. Cartwright), who is headmaster of the Normal School, Christchurch, Mr O. Banner, of the Normal School, Wellington, and Mr J. Barnett, of the Johnsonville School, Wellington. Points mentioned by the deputation included probationary assistants; the training of teachers for country schools, co-ordination between training colleges and universities, and the position of certificated teachers.

Mr Mason said he would consider the representations and reply soon.
