PARADE THROUGH CITY
SAILORS AND MARINES FROM ACHILLES
Comparatively few people saw the ship’s company of H.M.N.Z.S. Achilles march through the city yesterday morning, although the rain had ceased by the time the five platoons left the railway station at 9.45 a.m.
The Royal Marine band from the cruiser provided marching music, including the Royal Navy march, “Hearts of Oak,” as the smart lines of gaitered sailors, their rifles at the slope, swung alopg the city streets. Marching in rear of the seamen was a platoon of Royal Marines, whose bearing on the march evoked praise from bystanders and from those at the saluting base. s Four platoons of sailors and one of marines constituted the parade. They concluded tfreir march by saluting Brigadier E. t T. Rowllings, who stood at the saluting base outside the City Council buildings in’ Manchester Street.
Accompanying Brigadier Rowllings were Captain W. E. Banks, C.8.E., D.S.C., R.N., who commands H.M. N.Z.S. Achilles, Commander (E) J. A. Brockley, R.N., engineer officer, Commander M. B. C Holmes, R.N., his Worship, the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), Sir Robert Clark-Hall, and Mr C. H. Kersley.
