Test Match Against India.— England, still batting, had scored 286 for six wickets at the luncheon adjournment in their first innings in the first test match" against India, Hardstaff being not out with 114. India scored 200 in their first innings.—London, June 24.
Tennis in U.S.— ln the final of the Southern tennis championships played at Louisville, Kentucky, Talbert beat Parker 6-4, 6-1, 0-6, 4-6, 6-4. It was Talbert’s first victory over Parker in five meetings. Ted Schroeder, the national champion in 1942, beat Don McNeill, the 1940 champion, 2-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, in the final of the New Jersey State championships. Donald Budge won the world’s professional clay courts championship at Richmond. Virginia, defeating Riggs, 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.—New York, June 23.
Vic Patrick Gives Up Title.— The light-weight and welter-weight boxing chaihpion, Vic Patrick, announced today that he had given up the welterweight title and would never again fight out of the light-weight division. He said he was tired of meeting boxers almost a stone heavier, and if lightweight opponents were not found for him he would go out of boxing altogether. Patrick confirmed his previous statement that he had withdrawn from the proposed fight with the New Zealander, Clarrie Gordon. He was negotiating to go into business and might become a hotelkeeper.—Sydney, June 24.
