ALARM AT INCREASED CAR CONVERSIONS
HEAVIER PENALTIES ADVOCATED
Support of the action taken by the North Island Motor Union in writing to the Commissioner of Police (Mr J. Cummings) asking that still heavier penalties be imposed on persons converting motor vehicles to their own use was expressed at a meeting last evening of the South Island Motor Union.
Delegates to the meeting expressed alarm at the recent increase of car conversions.
It was reported that no complaint had been received from the public since petrol rationing had been abolished. and members expressed their appreciation at the way m which private owners of motor vehicles had played their part in the new arrangement.
A letter from the North Island Motor Union advocating an increased petrol price for after hours trading was not supported by the meeting.
Two delegates from the Dominion headquarters of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association will be present at a special meeting in Christchurch this week, which has been called by requisition, by some members of the Christchurch branch. The meeting desires to have rescinded a resolution passed at the annual meeting in Christchurch to raise the subscription of the association to 12s 6d, and it is expected that the discussion will centre on the use of the extra 2s 6d for the subscription to the “R.S.A. Review.” The Christchurch executive debated the subject of the special meeting last evening, going into committee shortly after the discussion began.
