Mr R. Boulter, His Majesty’s senior Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, left Wellington yesterday on a short visit to- the United Kingdom. During Mr Boulter’s absence, Mr H. F. Stevens, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner, will be in charge.—(P.A.)
Mr J. H. E. Schroder intimated to the Canterbury University, College Council yesterday that he did not intend to accept nomination for re-elec-tion as chairman because of other duties.
Tribute to the work during , the difficult days of the war of Mr H. L. R. Read, formerly Assistant-Manpower Officer at Christchurch, was paid at a gathering of members of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association yesterday. Mr Read has been transferred to take charge of the Hamilton office of the National Service Department. Best wishes for his success, and the thanks of members for his assistance during difficult times in his term of office in Christchurch were conveyed to Mr Read by the president (Mr W. A. Bascand). Mr C. T. Aschman, 0.8. E., was congratulated by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday afternoon on • his inclusion in the King’s Birthday honours. It was stated that the award was unique among those engaged in the primary teaching service in New Zealand, in which Mr Aschman had such a long and distinguished record. Mr T. H. Rutherford, of Waikari, has been appointed district commis : sioner for boy scouts of the Hurunui Local Association, comprising scout groups in the counties of Amuri and Waikari. Mr E. P. Combellack, of Murray Aynsley Hill, has been appointed District Commissioner of the Ngaio Local Association, comprising groups in Opawa, St. Martins, Heathcote. Lyttelton, and Diamond Harbour. Mr J. T. Watts, M.P.. who has been appointed to the Canterbury University College Council .in succession to Colonel G. J. Smith, was welcomed to the council yesterday afternoon. The work of Dr. D. B. Macleod as acting-Professor of Physics during the years the chair was vacant was grate-i fully acknowledged by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday afternoon.
Mr R. Lovell-Smith was congratulated by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday on being awarded an Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Scholarship. Sir W. Fletcher Shaw, immediate past president of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has accepted the invitation of the New Zealand Obstetrical and Gynaecological Association to visit New Zealand, and he is expected to arrive at the end of September— (P.A.)
