OBITUARY
MR W. G. SYDER From Our Own Correspondent NELSON, June 23. The death has occurred at Wakefield of Mr Walter George Syder, aged 93, one of the oldest Freemasons in New Zealand. Born on October 15, 1852, at Great Braxted, Essex, England, he travelled to New Zealand as shepherd in charge of 100 sheep for Mr John Grigg, Longbeach, in the sailing vessel W. W. Smith, of 777 tons gross register. He landed at Lyttelton in February, 1872. All the sheep were alive and had 20 lambs. Mr Syder went to the Palmert gold rush in 1873, and the distance of 3000 miles had to be walked from Cook Town on 11b of flour a day. The field was wrongly reported, and he spent nearly four years about Australia before returning to Mr Grigg’s station. Mr Syder was married on January 1, 1883, to Miss Sarah Adams Straw, and soon after took a pioneer farm at Kaitawa, Pahiatua, where they lived for nearly 20 years. The next 26 years were spent farming at Foxhill, Nelson, and he retired to Wakefield 17 years ago.
