REBUKE TO DUTCH MINISTER
COMMENT ON SHIPPING HOLD-UP
SYDNEY, June 22. The Federal Prime Minister (Mr Chifley). has rebuked the Dutch Minister to Australia (Baron van Aerssen) for a statement made by him on June 11 that Dutchmen would fail to understand the hold-up of Dutch ships in Australia, and that the ban on the destroyer, Piet Hein, was a threat to Dutch-Australian relations. “I may have much more to say later if those who claim to represent the Dutch Government persist in making such statements," said Mr Chifley. “The trouble over Dutch ships on the Australian waterfront has arisen because of a difference of opinion' between the Dutch authorities and the subjects' of the Dutch Government in Indonesia. I cigisider that diplomatic relations ire not improved when representatives of other Governments engage in newspaper controversies winch can easily be taken as intended to damage a government then in office.”
