LEVY ON RABBITSKINS

Sir, —I wish to voice a protest against the unjust operation of the 20 per cent, levy on the sale of all rabbitskins sold after May 22. This tax was imposed by the Government in 1942 at the request of landholders, who want to see the man who does the dirty work pay for the privilege of doing it, under the contention that it would equalise the rabbiters’ income all the year round and so stabilise the labour market in this respect. The point is the men who do the seasonal workmen farms and stations and rabbit in winter are paying to support the summer rabbiter, who works under easier climatic conditions and claims a subsidy from the landholder, who desires to avoid payment to balance his loss on the market. Twenty-three thousand pounds is paid out, against £BO,OOO collected. Who gets our money?—Yours, etc.. WINTER VICTIM. Rotherham, June 12, 1946.
