FLOAT CAPSIZES
R. J. BERRY HAS LUCKY ESCAPE The Yaldhurst trainer, R. J. Berry, and his three-year-old colt, Super Globe, had a narrow escape from serious injury when the float in which they were travelling capsized on the Main-South road on Saturday moi nine. Apparently the coupling broke, between the float and the truck which was towing it, and as the float tilted forward before capsizing Super Globe was thrown forward and Berry was pinned underneath him. , Fortunately neither trainer nor horse was injured, and when Super Globe was released he was soon contentedly feeding by the roadside. Super Globe, which was an acceptor in the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting, was withdrawn from his engagement, and wdll probably make his first appearance at the races at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting on July 6. Jottings Cameronian is being spelled at present, but he will soon be brought in to commence a preparation for the August ingJ. Butler Is educating a gelding by Grattan Loyal from Anna Wong, at New Brighton. Anna Wong, herself a winner. Is by Ei - in’s King from the Wrack mare, Queen Dulse. Tunis Victory was slow away in the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap at Ashburton. Driven by F. Smith, jun., Diamond Trust trailed Maioha into the straight in the Mount Wellington Handicap at the Auckland meeting, and then went on to win easily from his stablemate, Brass Buttons, with Maioha in third place. Hanover lost his chance when he broke up at the start of the Winchmore Trot Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. Herald won her second race since being purchased by Mr W. Schiavi when she hung on to beat Black Machine by a long head in the Mount Hobson Handicap a| Auckland. Rose o’ Day never appeared likely after making a slow beginning in the Winchmore Trot at Ashburton. Sprayman Sold
N. C. Price has sold Sprayman to Mr N. Simpson, Auckland, and this three-year-old son of Gamble and Krina, has gone into A. Holmes’s stable at Yaldhurst. At his first appearance as a two-year-old, Sprayman finished fourth to Highland Fling. Local Gold, and Stirling Castle in the Tlmaru Nursery Stakes; and he followed up with a win over Highland Fling and Doctor Ted in the Welcome Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting. Taken to the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on May 12. he ran third to Globe Direct and Local Gold in the Oarnaru Nursery Stakes, and he then finished the season with a splendid win over Doctor Ted and Local Gold in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton.
Sprayman has started in four races this season for two minor placings. At his second appearance he finished second to Sir Michael in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, and his other placing was a third to Sir Michael and Nelsonova in the New Zealand Champion Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 26. Sprayman should improve with age, and should hold his own over all distances in handicap events. Dead-heat at Ashburton Indigo and Cullion provided the best finish of the day at the Ashburton Rac- I ing Club’s - meeting on Saturday, when they dead-heated in the Lyndhurst Handicap Trot. These Methven-trained horses were in ninth and tenth position respectively with the first furlong covered: but at the end of half a mile they had improved their positions to follow Sure Catch, Lodestone, and Abel Tasman, with Glow Worm (which had made a particularly fast beginning from the 36 yards mark) losing ground at this stage through breaking. With a mile to go. In-, digo had raced up to the leader, Sure Catch, and they were followed by Lodestone. Abel Tasman, Harold Jinks, Culiion, Hal Derby, Rural Lady. Magnificent, and Glow Worm. .Except that Lodestone had dropped back and that Glow Worm had regained his lost ground, the order was little changed as the straight was reached. A furlong from the post Indigo appeared to have the race won; but Cullion hung on well under pressure to get up and divide the honours in the last stride. Owned and trained by G. McKendry, Cullion was bred by Mr T. H. McGirr, Methven. and is the 1936 foal of Mollie Pointer, which left other winners in Silver de Oro. Llewellyn’s Pride, Blair Athol. Jane Worthy, and True Guide. Cullion has proved costly to his admirers in his previous races by failing to go away correctly; but he is now racing in a specially designed hopple, and on Saturday’s performance he should soon win again. Indigo, which races in the interests of his breeder, M. C. McTigue, is a brother to Vtmv Ridge and Plunder Bar. Only a four-year-old, he has gradually improved this season and he should develop into a useful performer. N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Withdrawals for all events at the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Winter Meeting to be held on Saturday next must be received by 5 p.m. to-morrow (Tuesday). —Advt.
