HOCKEY

TRINITY MAINTAINS LEAD

Trinity maintained the lead in the Canterbury Hockey Association senior grade competition on Saturday when they beat Technical by 4 goals to 0. The grounds were in better order than in the previous week, but the standard Of hockey showed little improvement. The following are the results:— SENIOR GRADE TRINITY V. TECHNICAL ♦ Although beaten by four goals, Technical played better than the scores indicate. The halves, Roberts and Pullan, gave the Trinity forwards little time to work up any combination, and Brown, in goal, and Bailey, in the backs, set up a sturdy defence. The Technical forwards lacked thrust and the passes were too hard and ill-directed. On the other hand the Trinity half line was its weakest point, Green being the best of the line. Radcliffe was intercepting well, but failing to get the ball away. McCormick, on the wing, was patchy, but he put over seme neat centres. Glentworth was inclined to neglect his centre and passed mostly to his wing. Thomas was the pick of the line, and played a clever game all through. Bowden, although well marked, made full use of the opportunities that came his way.

Bowden (2), Thomas, and McCormick scored the goals for Trinity, and the final score was Trinity 4, Technical 0. Umpires were Messrs C. C. Holland and B. Moore. SELWYN V. REDCLIFFS Both teams were rearranged, and play in the first spell lacked combination. In the Selwyn team, J. Reece went to centre half, but took some time to settle down. Ih the second half he played a great game and started most of Selwyn’s moves. Whitford and Down worked well in the backs, and Miskimmin was the pick of the front line, which failed to get going until the second half. Thomson, in the backs, and Grimley, at centre half, were outstanding in the Redcliffs team, Grimley intercepting and passing well. Papps, in the halves, stopped the Selwyn right attack ih good style, and Dixey, though his intercepting was good, passed erratically. The first spell, which ended with no score, was slightly in favour of Redcliffs, but early in the second half Whitford netted from a penalty corner and McSkimmm connected with a neat pass from Scott to increase the score. Redcliffs soon equalised when Donkin registered twice in quick succession. Miskimmin centred for Besley to net -Selwyn’s third goal, and Miskimmin increased the total just before time. The final score was Selwyn 4, Redcliffs 2.

Umpires were Messrs B. Rogers and W. Skelton.

SYDENHAM A v. SYDENHAM B The game between the two Sydenham teams provided the most interesting hockey of the day, and the score of 3-all indicates, the evenness of the play.

The B team’s front line went well together and O’Keefe opened the score from a penalty corner. Robinson, on the wing, and O’Keefe, were the pick of an even line, but Smith and Messervy, of the opposing backs, were hard to pass. Peacock equalised the scores from a penalty corner, and Riseley put the A team in the lead shortly before half-time. The pace increased in the second half and Neate equalised the scores with a good shot, and Smythe put the B team ahead shortly after. The closing stages were fast and exciting and Morris scored the equalising goal shortly before play ended. The final score was: A team 3, B team 3. The umpires were Messrs H. Lloyd and C. Gutry. UNIVERSITY v. MARATHON University had the better of the first half, but Marathon held them out until half-way through the spell. Then Smith netted from a difficult angle and Johnson connected with a neat pass from Cooke, to increase the total, and half-time came with the score: University 2, Marathon 0. The second spell was more even and Marathon held its own. University lost Smith, through an injury, his place being taken by Sexton. A. Clapshaw netted twice for Marathon and evened the score, but Mann scored the winning goal shortly before the game ended, with the score: University 3, Marathon 2. The umpires were Messrs H. W. Gourlay and W. Perry. LOWER GRADES Second Grade H. 5.0.8. 3, University B 2. Trinity A 2, Sydenham A 0. Sydenham B 2, Trinity B 1. Selwyn A 3, Harewood 1.
