COLLEGE MATCH
CHRIST’S DEFEATS ST. ANDREW’S In the first inter-sCcondary school Rugby match g-£ the season, Christ’s College beat St. Andrew’s on Saturday by 26 points. The match did not produce a high standard of football, but the display of the Christ’s College forwards saved it from mediocrity. The winning pack played finely throughout; its advantage in weight was used fully in the scrums and rucks, and in the loose practically every Christ’s College forward showed speed and anticipation. Back movements, however, were few, particularly in the first spell. There were few successful attempts at straightening up the attacks by the inside backs, who usually turned in-field into defending forwards. Nevertheless, the Christ’s College wing three-quarters, A. L. Tapley and G. T. Wright, were both given many opportunities, from loose play, of showing their speed and determination. At fullback D. R. Farrant was very sound; his kicking was always saffe, and frequently brilliant. Of the forwards, O. A. Hutchison, R. B. Allison, and F. F. Wilding were perhaps the best, with D. G. Crawford leading them well. The St. Andrew’s forwards weighed, on an average, almost two stone less than their opponents, and for that reason their performance in obtaining a fair share of the ball from the scrums was excellent. In the loose, however, they were out-played from the start, although the lightest forward on the ground, R. E. Seque, gave a great display, and another light forward, I. Ferguson, followed up consistently. The St. Andrew’s backs, however, played poorly. At first five-eighths, E. E. Hannah had an off day, dropping his passes frequently, but outside him the captain, A. M. Kerr, did quite well. St. Andrew’s was unfortunate in having such a large deficit at the end of the game, being unlucky eral times with the erratic bounce of the new ball
The teams were:— , Christ’s College.—D. R. Farrant; A. L. Tapley, C. G. Coull, G. T. Wright; R. J. M. Biggs, B. H. Jaggar; W. M. Macdonald; F. C. Watson, R. B. Allison, S. H. Moody. F. F. Wilding, O. Dalgleish, E. W. Musgrove. J. D. Barrell, I. Winskill. I. Ferguson. R. E. Seque. J. J. St Soon after the start a Christ’s College forward rush was checked near the St. Andrew’s line. The ball was heeled ouickly and Macdonald began a blind side movement which ended in a fine try bv Tapley A few minutes later Tapley broke through a tackle to score iq the corner, and Hutchison converted with a fine kick! Jaggar then scored a sensational try. He broke clear and started for the line 60 yards away. Kerr set off in pursuit, and although he gained ground Jaggar swerved beautifully as Kerr di yed for him and ran round to score behind the posts. Macdonald converted. Christ’s College scored immediately after the interval, when the St. Andrew s full-back was beaten by a peculiar bounce and Wright took the ball to score under the posts. Macdonald converted. Goodwin scored soon after, from a loose forward rush. Another try came when Wright took a pass from Goodwin and made a great run up the line before sending the ball back to Goodwin, who scored near the posts. Macdonald again converted Near the end of the game Kerr kickid a good penalty goal for St. Andrews. The final score was Christ s College 29, St. Andrew’s 3. The referee was Mr W. J. Brown.
