Sjahrir’s Plan For Settlement
ALLIANCE WITH NETHERLANDS (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 19. “Tlie Dutch describe the latest proposals for an Indonesian settlement submitted to-day by the Indonesian Prime Minister (Sutan Sjahrir) as 'a serious step backwards’,” says the correspondent of the Associated Press at The Hague. “The official communique says that Sjahrir has proposed a treaty with the Netherlands containing formal recognition of the Indonesian Government to establish an Indonesian Free State, which would conclude an alliance with the Netherlands. Further proposals provide for the cessation of hostilities, with no change in the position or strength of the armed forces on either side.”
