“DRAINPIPE” GUNS

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON. June 19. The Director-General of Artillery (Major-General W. J. Jfldridgfi) revealed that Britain’s latest guns, secretly developed since the war. are little more than “light-weight drainpines’’ which infantry could carry, but capable of firing heavy shells great distances. The barrel of the new. guns is open at both ends and the gas escapes backwards through a series of tunnels which eliminates kick and makes a complicated gun mounting unnecessary. Major-General Eldridge expressed the view that the drainpipe guns, which can also be used against aircraft, might make the tank obsolete.
