ROAD TRANSPORT TO BE USED

* SUPPLEMENTING RAIL SERVICES

PLANS FOR NORTH ISLAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 20. Privately owned service cars and trucks Will be used to supplement the Railway Department’s own fleets lor transporting both passengers and goods by road in replacement oi the curtailed rail services. Arrangements were msde yesterday afternoon tor. the Railway Department to obtain the necessary temporary licences to run motor trucks in lieu ot trains, and also to hire privately owned trucks under contract, to run as required by the department. Road transport organisations were advised of the position yesterday. Arrangements are now being made for provision of the transport required throughout the island. Passenger service operators have also been requested to supplement the curtailed rail services, and together with the railway road services will do so. but as adequate replacement ot plant during and since the war has not befen possible, it cannot be expected that all normal railway passenger traffic will be carried by road.
