UNO ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL
RUSSIAN PROPOSAL APPROVED NEW YORK, June 18. Russia won its first major victory in the United Nations Social and Economic Council when the Council approved by 11 votes to 5 the principle that members of all the Council commissions should be government representatives. The “New York Times” says: “The Council, in accepting the Russian view, overlooked recommendations from most of its nuclear commissions established in London earlier in the year. The nuclear commissions, which subsequently met for weeks in New York, generally recommended the appointment of permanent commissions with some governmental representatives and some members appointed because of their outstanding qualifications in certain fields. Britain. America, Canada. Lebanon, : and Belgium voted against the Russian ■ resolution. I The Council’s drafting committee recommended that the Economic and i Employment Commission should con- ' tain a sub-commission for promoting • world-wide full employment apd eco- ' nomic stability.
