NEHRU GOING TO KASHMIR
DEFENDING ARRESTED PARTY LEADER
STATE INTENDS TO BAN ENTRY (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, June 19. The president-elect of the Congress Party . (Pandit Nehru) said to-day that he was going to Kashmir to arrange for the defence of Sheik Mohamed Abdullah, president of the Kashmir National Conference, the recognised People’s Party in the State, who was arrested last month for sedition. A message from Kashmir says that the Government has decided to ban Pandit Nehru’s entry into the State.
Sheik Mohamed Abdullah and all the leading members of the Kashmir National Conference were arrested on May 21. A Government communique at the time said that they had been arrested for making speeches inciting the people to destroy the existing Government. repudiate their allegiance to the Maharaja and force him to quit Kashmir. Sheik Mohamed Abdullah was also reported to have been carrying on an agitation against the Treaty of Amritsar by which Kashmir was handed over to the present ruling family.
