Kiwi in Haystack
When Mr Martin, a settler near Matamata, was putting the top back on a haystack on his farm, he was very surprised to discover a fullgrown kiwi. The bird ran round the stack and burrowed into the other side, but was captured after a sharp struggle. Mr Martin telegraphed the news of the discovery to the zoo authorities, but at the time he was interviewed he had had no reply He considers that the bird came down from the Kaimai ranges, three miles away The kiwi was dark brown in colour, the feathers having black tips. It had a powerful beak about four inches long, and strong legs. This capture appears to bear out the opinion of many district residents that kiwis are increasing in the Kaimais. —(P.A.)
