NO. 14 HIGHWAYS COUNCIL

ESTIMATES APPROVED Principal works carried out last year were the completion of the Kaiapoi bridge, Sealing of the approaches to the Waimakariri river bridge, recosting the highway from Rolleston to Burnham, and from Evans Pass to the timeball station, said the chairman (Mr E. F. Evans) at the annual meeting of the No. 14 District Highways Council yesterday afternoon. Difficulties in obtaining materials still hampered construction work. More would have to be done to maintain sealed surfaces because of the increased traffic following the easing in petrol restrictions. Since the cost of work was high at present, extending the life of lavements even two or three years would probably prove economical in the long run. When the estimates were considered, Mr Evans said provision was not inchided for flood damage, which was being de? It with separately. Restriction had been necessary on new works proposed so that the greatest amount of maintenance possible could be done. Where heavy reductions on the amount applied for were shown the difference in most cases represented some major reconstruction work which could not be approved. The following list shows the expenditure recommended, with the amount sought by the local body in parenthesis. the Main Highways Board bearding 75 per cent, of the cost and the local body the remainder:—County councils: Akaroa. £4070 (£4070); Ashley, £2787 (£2787): Ellesmere. £5532 (£5532): Eyre. £4290 (£4290); Halswell. £3480 (£9980); Heathcote £WO (£4410); Kowai. £1470 (£1470); Malvern, £4200 (£16.200); Mount Herbert, £5219 (£6219); OxJ ord : n (£14,856); .Rangiora, £2302 (£2302), Panarua, £1925 (£1925): Selwyn, £3791 (£3791): Sorings. £3241 (£3272); Waimairi, £2472 (£2472); Wairewa. £ 3942 (£ 3942) -Borough councils: Akaroa, £390 (£390); Kaiapoi £176 (£l76);' Rangiora. £407 (£407); Lyttelton. £978 (£978).
