BOXING

AMATEUR TOURNAMENT FAST AND WILLING BOUTS Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the Christchurch Amateur Boxing Sports Club’s tournament, held in the Civic Theatre last evening, was the extremely good matching of the boxers taking part. Every bout on the programme was contested closely, and most of them provided amateur boxing of a very high standard. The best bout of the evening was in the welter-weight class, between D. Jackson and G. Chang. Both boxers hit hard, and the very fast pace at which the fight began was maintained almost to the ena of the third round, Chang used a good left frequently in the last two rounds, and was unlucky to lose. The 'judges during the evening were Messrs J. D. Hutchison, A. Thompson, A Bourne, R. Hawes, and E. Morris, and the referees Messrs C. Chisnail and P. Hawes. In the following results, the decisions were on points unless otherwise stated:—

Papet-Weight W. Collins (Lytteltori), sst 71b, beat M. Walker (Murfitt’s), sst, in a willing bout. The winner displayed unusual coolness for his age. N. Clarke (Boyle’s), sst 81b, beat T Lucas (Murfitt’s). sst 61b. Clarke was much shorter than his opponent, but generally held the initiative. Fly-weight R. Timmings (Elite), 7st 101 b, beat W. Rouse (Brown’s), 7st 111 b. Timmings was more aggressive and a straighter puncher than Rouse, who failed to make the most of his advantage in reach. J. Winder (Air Force), 7st 61b. beat D. J. Thistoll (Murfitt’s), 7st 81b. Winder appeared the more experienced boxer and punched more effectively. L. Whittaker (Brown’s), 7st 61b, beat B. Shaw (Boyle’s), 7st 81b: in a close bout. Feather-weight I. McClure (Murfitt’s), Ost, beat L. McClintock (Boyle’s), Bst 101 b. McClintock 'signalled badly, and his chief offensive weapon was a tremendous, almost overarm, right. McClure, the taller boxer, punched straighter. J. Croucher (Lyttelton), 9st, beat J. Grant (Crichton Cobbers), 9st, on a technical knock-out in the first round. The boxers appeared evenly matched, but Croucher landed a very heavy right which dazed Grant.

Light-weight J. Murfitt (Riccarton), 9st 51b, beat A. Russell (Air Force), 9st 91b, in a very fast bout The contestants were evenly matched, and although Russell punched more cleanly, Murfitt made the pace. Russell was in distress in the last round, but fought back gamely and lost a very good bout by a narrow margin. B. Clark (Murfitt’s). 9st 71b, beat B. Anderson (Crichton Cobbers), 9st 71b, in a close contest. Anderson made the pace but Clark had a far more effective straight left. Welter-weight N. Bachop (Lyttelton), lOst 101 b, beat A. Pengelly (Wrights’s), lOst 11b. Bachop forced the pace, and although Pengelly appeared to be the superior boxer, Bachop lasted betterx and won a narrow decision D. Jackson (Brown’s), lOst, beat G. Chang (Wright’s), lOst 31b, in an extremely good bout. Chang, using a most unorthodox style, began wildly, and Jackson, hitting straighter, went ahead. Both continued to hit hard, but in the second round Chang settled down and a succession of straight lefts worried Jackson. The last round was fought at the same pace, and Chang was perhaps unlucky not. to get the decision, which met with a very mixed reception Heavy-weight Z. Jacobs (Crichton Cobbers). 13st 101 b beat K. Lammas (Air Force). The bout was a willing one, but -Jacobs hit harder and more often. In the last round. Lammas scored with a number of rights to the -heart, but could not make up the lost ground.
