WELLINGTON GAS SUPPLY
SERIOUS SHORTAGE OF COAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 18. No supplies of coal are at hand for work to commence at the Wellington Gas Company to-morrow morning. When announcing that the coal position continued to be serious, officials said to-night that they did not know how those dependent on gas would fare until further supplies were delivered. Until coal from the Karu, which arrived in Wellington from Westport to-day, is unloaded/ there will be no gas. The Karu’s cargo consists of 1000 tons of coal. Reductions made in pressure late this afternoon would have to continue during to-morrow, even after the Karu’s coal was utilised. Whereas 200 tons of coal are required every day to maintain the normal gas supply in Wellington, only 10 tons were available when the Wingatui unloaded this afternoon. The whole supply was exhausted by to-night.
