RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY UNION

WAIRARAPA MATCH ON SEPTEMBER 11

I A recommendation from the competitions committee that September 11 be accepted as the date for the representative match with Wairarapa was adopted at a meeting last evening of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union. Mr R. W. Blazey, for the competitions committee, said that it would be a Wednesday game, matches against Australia and Buller being played on the Saturdays before and after the Wairarapa match.

A complaint about spectators encroaching on the playing area at Sydenham Park was made in a letter from Mr C. G. Crawford, referee of a senior match between Sydenham and Marist. Mr Crawford said that he had had to stop play many times to remove hundreds of spectators from the ground. At the northern, in-goal area, he had had to get a large group away, with the assistance of a policeman, but when play went upfield the crowd returned. In fairness to players and referees, something should be done to keep spectators off the playing area.

It was decided to leave the matter in the meantime, but when the next game was to be played at Sydenham Park to advise the two clubs concerned to provide officials to look after the crowd. Mr R. W. Blazey, presenting the com--petitions committee’s report, said that there was some misapprehension regarding the senior competition. It had been decided to play through to August 31, when the final four” system would be used. On the recommendation of the competitions committee, it was decided to advise the South Canterbury Union that owing to the heavy list of representative fixtures, a match with Canterbury could not be arranged for this season, but that the match could be played next year.. Mr Blazey said that if such a match were played on the Thursday before the Canterbury team played Southland for the Ranfurly Shield, it would not be suitable; if it were played after, it would keep the players away far too long. A request from the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College for the use of Rugby Park for a match against the Dunedin Training College on July 11 was granted, subject to the condition of the ground. A previous request from the college had asked for the use of Lancaster Park for the game. Mr J. O. Hattersley said that on the day Wellington played Canterbury at Christchurch, a North v. South Universe ties’ match was to be played at Wellington. The South Island selectors would be at Christchurch, and he thought it hardly fair that the university men would not be watched.

Mr E. V. Phillips said it was a matter* which should have beefi discussed by the New Zealand Union.

It was decided to leave the matter to the Canterbury* selector, who was directed to suggest that university players who had already obtained a New Zealand blue make themselves available for the game at Christchurch.
