TROPHY FOR MAORI FARMERS
AWARDS ANNOUNCED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 18. First place in the annual competition among Maori farmers for the Ahuwhenua trophy, conducted by the Ahuwhenua Trust Board, has been awarded this year to Mr Henare Paraone, Clevedon. An official announcement states that the judge, Mr T. E. Rodda, of the Department of Agriculture. Hamilton, is to be commended for the painstaking efforts he took in judging the competition, the standard of which was very high. . Viscount Bledisloe, who presented the trophy, inaugurated the competition in 1933 and it is competed for by Maori farmers who are assisted by the Government under native land development schemes. Mr Paraone has maintained a high standard of efficiency for some years and twice- before has been placed in the contest. He is a good all-round farmer and the judge was impressed by the way he plans a lead. Another pleasing feature, applicable to all the contestants, was the manner in which the Maoris take care of their machinery and implements, and their pride in their homes and gardens.
Second place has been awarded to Mr Robert Tanginoa Tapa, Ranana, Wanganui, who has uone very good work in eliminating noxious weeds and establishing good grass pastures. Mr Wiremu Matene Naere, of Waiotemarama, Hokianga, was awarded third place and is considered a thorough and economical farmer, very keen to expand his knowledge.
