TELEPHONE LINE TO WEST COAST

SURVEY OF NEW RAILWAY ORDERED . A proposal for constructing an alternative telephone line to the West Coast via the Lewis Pass and the ordering of a survey of a new railway from Cape Foulwind to Charleston have been to the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. Special instruction, advised the Act-ing-Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jones), had been issued that the siting of the poles for the telephone line was to safeguard the bush from disfiguration or destruction. By using modern transmission methods only one pair of wires would be needed. The extension of the railway from Westport to Cape Foulwind on to Charleston was suggested to the Government to open up coal and mineral deposits. The Cabinet had issued instructions that the survey was to be made when qualified men were available.
