ELECTION OF COUNCIL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 18. The first election under the New Zealand Council for Educational Research Act, 1945, resulted in the appointment to the council of the following members: —Professor C. L. Bailey of Wellington; Dr. James Hight, of Christchurch; Sir Thomas Hunter, of Wellington; Dr. J. H. Murdoch, of Auckland; Miss E. E. Stephens, of Palmerston North; and' Dr. R. Winterbourn, of Christchurch. Mr E. Partridge, of Dunedin, was appointed to the council by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Education (tfie Hon. H. G. R. Mason V When the new council met in Wellington. Sir Thomas Hunter was elected chairman, Dr. James Hight deputychairman, Profesßor Bailey treasurer, and Miss Stephens a member of the executive 'committee. The council reviewed the policies and work of the organisation and considered applications for research grants. Among projects approved was one for the investigation into the effect of the consolidation of schools, a subject on which there has recently been a good deal of public discussion.
