DEANS ESTATE

RICCARTON COUNCIL DROPS NEGOTIATIONS

Because of the withdrawal of the Waimairi County Council from nego'tiations for the joint purchase as a community centre of the Deans Estate by the Christchurch City Council, Riccarton Borough Council, and the Waimairi County Council, the Riccarton Council last evening decided to advise Mr John Deans and the City Council that it could not proceed on the basis discussed. The Waimairi Council wrote "that because the estate was on the edge of its area, it was considered that ratepayers would not sanction the raising of a loan for the purchase. Cr. F. C. Evans said that the City Council had offered to pay half if the other two councils would share the remainder. Riccarton could not pay an equal sum to the City Council. “It will be a shameful thing to have that property split up,” said Cr. E. J. Bradshaw. “Once dynamite is put under the bush there will be more groaning than that of the trees. We pay tribute to the vision of the pioneers, and yet in 1946 we are not prepared to preserve this historic spot.” I
