ACHIEVEMENTS OF LABOUR

PRIME MINISTER’S REVIEW (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 17. “In the seven months that have elapsed since the last conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, heartening progress has been made with the task of restoring New Zealand to a peace-time footing. We have been able to turn our hands again to the work of social and economic reform which we had been forced to lay aside by the compelling demands of war,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), reporting for the Parliamentary section to the annual conference df the Labour Party to-day. Mr Fraser said that four achievements already on record since Labour took office were the ending of unemployment, the establishment of adequate wage levels, the building of a social security system, and the introduction of the 40-hour week and paid holidays. The New Zealand Government could justifiably be proud, too. of abolishing poverty. Mr Fraser reviewed achievements in education, rehabilitation, Maori affairs, finance, national works, and housing. He was given a rousing welcome, with the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” and was warmly cheered at the end of his address.
