TINS FOR FAT

SHORTAGE REPORTED TO FAMINE COMMITTEE

An urgent need of tins for the collection of fat was reported to the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee yesterday by Mr A. E. Kincaid. There was plenty of fat available, but containers were hard to obtain, he said, as they could not be recovered after use in rendering down. Anyone knowing of a source of supply could assist the committee and the Red Cross Society in their collections. was suggested that some rblief might be obtained by establishing district depots where smaller contributions could be made into a bulk stock. The use of manure sacks was also recommended, but it was stated that boxes were not satisfactory. It was hoped to arrange with certain chain stores to receive fat for collection. . A ton and a half of fat had been collected in the first fortnight of the campaign.

In reply to the committee’s* suggestion that the release of more unrationed meat would make more coupons available for surrender, advice was received from the Food Controller that this was not possible. Mr A. E. Bartrum asked for a clarification of the conditions governing the surrender of coupons. He understood that it did not matter if the coupons had expired, he said, but now there was some suggestion that only current coupons were acceptable. By the time they were counted, they had expired anyway, so a month’s latitude at least should be allowed. It was agreed to obtain a ruling. The CORSO committee was thanked for collecting more than 100,000 coupons.

It was reported that in a “farmer to farmer” talk on increasing production, Mr A. M. Carpenter would speak m a national broadcast at 7 o’clock evening. When a slow response “in the famine relief campaign in some districts was reported, it was agreed to ask Red Cross Society branches and patriotic committees to assist. Several hundred cases of goods will be shipped at the end of this week ftViC 35 the s P ace available is not quite filled, country centres holding goods were asked to send stocks to the Christchurch food depot. A depot for the reception of coupons, food parcels, and other gifts will open in Cathedral square to-morrow.
