HOCKEY

PLAY ON ROUGH GROUNDS SATURDAY’S MATCHES Rough grounds prevented good stick play on Saturday when the eighth round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competition matches was played. TRINITY v. SYDENHAM A Although Trinity played far below its usual standard it managed to snatch a last-minute victory in the match against Sydenham A. Although Sydenham had the better of the play, lack of scoring ability lost the game. The Trinity forwards were ill-fed by the halves, and there was a lack of their usual passing and stick work. The backs were sound and stopped many Sydenham rushes, and Clarke, in goal, gave a sound exhibition. Sydenham set the pace all through, the forwards displaying good combination ana dash. Of a good half line, Randall and Peacock were outstanding, and kept their forwards well supplied with the ball. Scores were level at half-time, goals being scored for Sydenham by Browntie and Riseley, and for Trinity by Bowden and Glentworth. In the second half Calvert put Sydenham in the lead, but Bowden soon equalised and scored the winning goal in the last minute of the game. The final score was: Trinity 4. Sydenham A 3. Umpires: Messrs N. Cutler ' and H. Teague.

UNIVERSITY v. REDCLIFFS In a game that produced little firstclass stick play, University beat Redcliffs by 3 goals to 0. Redcliffs rearranged the front line, Grimley going to the centre. The change was no improvement, as there was little combination. C. Dale, on the wing, played well when given the opportunity, which was seldom. L. Dixey, in the half line, was the pick of the team, and R. Gray, at back, was sound on defence. The bumpy ground hampered University in Its usual short passing, and the team’s game was ragged throughout. University led by one goal scored by Johnston at half-time, and in the second spell Walter netted from a penalty corner, and Eggleton also scored. The final score was; University 3, Redcliffs 0, Umpires: Messrs C. A. Rogers and J. Reece.

MARATHON V. SELWYN Marathon played a surprisingly Vood game to beat Selwyn by 4 goals to 2. The work of L. Jones, the Canterbury goalkeeper, was a factor in Marathon's victory, as he stopped many shots by the Selwyn forwards. The forwards, led by Ayson, played with dash and speed, passing the ball about well. Selwyn rearranged the forwards, Leslie going to the right wing and McOscar to the left. The change was not a success, and the line lacked understanding. At half-time Marathon led by three goals, scored by Ayson from a penalty bully, Deakin. and Aysdn, to one, scored by Reece. Marathon Increased the lead when Deakin scored early in the second spell. Selwyn improved later and Reece again netted. The final score was: Marathon 4, Selwyn 2. Umpires: Messrs K. Hamilton and H. Lloyd.

SYDENHAM B v. TECHNIC Al, After leading by 3 goals to 2 at halftime, Technical was beaten by Sydenham Bby the odd goal in seven. In the early stages Technical had the advantage, and R. Bailey and Dale registered. Sydenham was quick to equalise through Malone and Neate, but Dale put Technical in the lead shortly before the interval. The second half was very even, but Technical was unable to find the net. Robinson netted to equalise the scores, and shortly before time O’Keefe goaled to give Sydenham a victory. The final score was: Sydenham B 4, Technical 3. Umpires: Messrs E. Fox' and R. Rusbridge. i LOWER GRADES
