CHATHAM CUP SERIES ~ WESTERN BEATEN BY TECHNICAL The local Chatham Cup competition, which will be completed by the meeting of the champion North ana South Island club sides in Wellington during August, was begun on Saturday afternoon. At English Park, Western, the holder of the trophy, was beaten by the only other outstanding team in the championship, Technical. The match was fast and interesting and was played under ideal conditions. The Technical A team, which is leading in the reserve grade and is playing, in this series as a B side, had a win over Watersiders at Spreydon Domain. Results:— Technical Old Boys A 4, Western 3. Technical Old Boys B 9, Watersiders 0. Nomads 2, Thistle 1. * Shamrock 6, Celtic 5. TECHNICAL V. WESTERN At English Park, Technical beat Western by the odd goal in seven after extra time had been played. The game was hard, fast, and interesting throughout, with Technical’s bustling type of football proving the deciding factor. Western, the holder of the Chatham Cup, has suffered more than any 'other team this season through injuries. With Graham, Almond, and McNaughton out, on Saturday the side’s chances were further set back by the injury to J. Smith, its best scoring forward, 10 minutes from the Western held a two-gdal lead at half time, and shortly afterwards was ahead by three goals to one. From here the side wilted under the increased pressure of the Technical team. Though the team was beaten, several members gave outstanding displays. M. Gordon, at centre-half, was brilliant, as was R. Smith in the forwards. C. Anderson and F. Richards were others who capably shouldered their share of the work. Technical on the day played an exceptional game. The defence was quick in recovery, the halves played an excellent positional game, and the forwards made up in determination and dash what they lacked in finish. The side had easily the best of the second half, and was still more impressive during the extra time played. S. Dean, at right full-back, gave the best display of his career. Goals were
scored for Technical by D. Grieve (2), E. Harris and C. Bailey. R. Smith (2) and G. Keyes netted for Western. Referee: Mr T. Gottermeyer. TECHNICAL B v. WATERSIDERS Technical B, playing as Technical A in the reserve grade, had little trouble in beating Watersiders at Spreydon. The side is very little below its senior team in strength, and contains only one man who has not regularly played senior. In its own grade, it has scored 50 goals to three against, and of the latter two have been netted by its own players. On Saturday the side dominated play with fast raking movements, and in spite of a spirited defence soon put the result of the game beyond doubt. The side gave a good exhibition of cohesive football, and on Saturday’s performance is capable of beating any of the other local semi-finalists in the Chatham Cup knock-out. Watersiders were outclassed, although Rate, jOrmsby, Toal, Burke, and Hannigan all played well. Goals were scored for Technical by C. Hancox (5), J. Mallinson (2), R. Storer, and J. Hollows. Referee: Mr L. Fleete. NOMADS v. THISTLE At St. Albans Park, Nomads, playing beter constructive football, .beat Thistle by 2 goals to 1. Thistle had some grand scoring opportunities, but poof finish nullified them. The forwards, though at full strength, lacked solidity in spite of fine generalship by G. McAnulty and A. Sutherland. The former was always dangerous in possession. Nomads gave a display that it should be capable of more often. The three divisions worked harmoniously and the flanks were given every opportunity to make ground in attacking movements. Mcßae. Taylor, Beavis, and A. Souter were prominent in a steady Nomads eleven. Goals were scored for Nomads by D. Souter and A. Souter. J. Druker scored for Thistle. Referee. Mr T. F. Mathie. SHAMROCK v. CELTIC At Barrington Park Celtic looked to have the game won with three goals up at half-time, but Shamrock took up the chase and clinched the match during extra time. Both sides played fast, open football with keeness at times more noticeable than accuracy. Shamrock has shown consistent improvement in matches this season, and whilst its play in the opening stages had little to recommend it, the side came back to form after the interval. Hilton, Freatus, and Whelan put in some telling work. O’Brien, Mc-
Menamin, Tallott, and McGlinchey were the spearhead of the Celtic attack early, but lack of initiative ruled out advantages later on. Goals were scored for Shamrock by H. De Freatus (3), P. Whelan, and J. Gibbens. J. McGlinchey (4) and K. Tallott netted for Celtic. Referee: Mr F. Cope. LOWER GRADES Senior Reserve.—Thistle 5, Nomads 0; Western 3.
